Mural Activity for Secondary Art Class – by a Hawaii Art Teacher
Materials:
4 Roller brushes
4 Small paint brushes for the fine edges
1 Gallon teal paint
3 or 4 airbrushes
Various coloured paint
Thin cardboard
Pencils
4-5 Pairs of Scissors

My art room is designed such that the cupboards and counters run around the base of the room at about 4 feet high (3.3 meters). The upper half of each wall is dark green wall. One of my 10th grade (year 10) students said the green looked old and dirty and suggested that we paint the walls a nice teal blue. Another student popped up with the idea of painting the value words for each of the grade levels on the walls.

I loved the idea so I got some money out of the slush fund to get the roller brushes and paint. Because I run the art lab, I had all of the other materials at my disposal.

The class that made the suggestion did the painting of the walls. Then I divided each class into work teams to design, 2 teams cut and prepared the words and letters into cardboard patterns. One team worked on the wall design – where the words would be placed and at what angle. Other teams worked on the airbrush team. Each grade took the IQ, EQ, SQ words from their specific year in the secondary Q4V curriculum and added it to the art room wall.

Because my students usually have art only 3 times a week, the entire project took approximately three weeks to complete. But it was worth it. My room looks great and the kids loved doing it!!
